Peel police warn residents of scam calls impersonating officers | CBC News
Peel Region police warn residents about fraudsters using spoofing technology to make scam calls appear to originate from the Peel Regional Police non-emergency number, 905-453-3311. Callers may claim to be Peel police officers, use fake names and badge numbers, and assert that the recipient or their phone number is under investigation for fraud or other crimes. The goal is to obtain personal information, including banking and financial details. Police advise not to rely on caller ID, not to provide any personal, banking, or financial information by phone, and to hang up and block the number when possible. Residents should not stay on the line under pressure or respond to threats, and should contact Peel police directly to verify or report the call. Information should be shared with family and friends, and additional guidance is available from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
"Police in Peel Region are warning the public not to be fooled by spoof calls from fraudsters posing as police and who want to obtain personal, banking and financial information. These scam calls are made with the help of spoofing technology, which makes them appear as though they are coming from the the Peel Regional Police non-emergency phone number, 905-453-3311, police said in a news release Friday."
"Police said the callers may falsely identify themselves as Peel police officers and may provide fake names and badge numbers to appear legitimate. The callers may also claim the person who picks up the phone and their phone number are being investigated by police for fraud or other crimes. Police said the caller may try to obtain personal information, including banking and financial details, from unsuspecting people."
""Peel Regional Police are reminding the public not to rely solely on caller ID, as phone numbers can easily be manipulated through technology," police said in the release. If residents receive such calls, they are urged to follow the these tips: Do not provide personal, banking, or financial information over the phone. Hang up immediately and block the phone number if possible."
"Do not feel pressured to stay on the call or respond to threats or demands. Contact Peel police directly at 905-453-3311 to verify the legitimacy of the call or report the incident. Share fraud prevention information with family and friends to help protect the community. For more fraud prevention information, police urge residents to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre."
