Two fatal motorcycle collisions in Toronto within 24 hours prompted police to urge all drivers to pay close attention and treat road safety as shared responsibility. Even when motorists drive safely, motorcyclists face much greater risk of serious injury or death because motorcycles lack a protective steel frame. Police emphasized scanning and looking again before turning across traffic, since many collisions occur when drivers turn right into the path of an oncoming motorcycle with no escape for the rider. Speeding and loss of control were identified as primary causes in fatal motorcycle crashes on OPP-monitored roads. Motorists and motorcyclists were urged to be better drivers and riders, share the road, avoid aggressive driving, and wear safety gear.
"“Scan, look, look again before you make that turn across traffic because that's very often where these collisions take place, where drivers are turning right into the path of an oncoming motorcycle and the motorcyclist has no escape,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Tuesday."
"“As we continue to go through summer, we will see more of these vehicles and more motorcycles out on the roads. And sadly, statistically we will see more deaths. And that's something that is absolutely tragic and certainly preventable,” Schmidt said."
"“Try to be the better driver, be the better rider and share the road in a way that we all get to our destination safely without the frustration of aggressive driving around,” he added."
"“The majority of motorcycle accidents are usually intersection collisions and often it's not the motorcyclist's fault. It's the car not looking,” he said. “People are not going to keep you safe. You are going to keep yourself safe.”"
