Ottawa gave Stellantis $105M for Ont. plants before automaker revealed U.S. plans | CBC News
""We're going to enforce our contractual rights, definitely," said Champagne, who was involved in negotiating contracts with Stellantis. "You just have to look at their circumstances, what was promised and what is being delivered.""
"'Going to enforce our contractual rights', says Champagne on Stellantis returning government money: Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne was asked if he is looking for a return on investment following auto manufacturer Stellantis shipping production out of Ontario to the U.S., after the government provided the company with millions in support to encourage production in Canada."
The federal government is reviewing a funding agreement with Stellantis after the automaker announced moving Jeep Compass production from Brampton, Ontario, to Illinois. Ottawa provided $18.6 million in 2023 and $85.9 million in 2024 to retool Windsor and Brampton plants, part of a previously announced $529 million Strategic Innovation Fund commitment to modernize those facilities for electric-vehicle production. The government will examine promised deliverables against actual outcomes and may enforce contractual rights or seek repayment if terms were violated. The U.S. welcomed the move and U.S. officials have signaled intentions to expand American auto assembly.
