"This was not a small operation."
"It was a sophisticated distribution network and Peel Region served as a major hub of its activities."
"Organized retail theft is not a victimless crime."
"When retailers experience repeated losses of this scale, the effects are felt throughout the community, including increased prices and reduced product availability."
An organized retail theft syndicate stole more than one million dollars worth of razors, nicotine gun, makeup and face creams, mostly from Shoppers Drug Marts across Ontario and Quebec. Twenty-one individuals from Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area, aged 15 to 75, were arrested in the operation. The scheme involved people filling bags designed to defeat security systems, leaving stores undetected, transporting goods to Mississauga, and moving items to liquidation warehouses and wholesalers for resale to the public. The thefts date back to February 2024 and number in the hundreds or thousands; two arrests remain outstanding. Multiple regional police services collaborated under Project Sommes.
