OPP completes investigation into Toronto police officers' conduct in Umar Zameer trial | CBC News
"The OPP investigation was launched that same year at the request of Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw after the judge in the case said it was possible three witness officers had colluded in their testimonies. Nearly two years on, the OPP say their investigation is complete, but that it's up to Toronto police to release the findings."
"During Zameer's trial, Justice Anne Molloy noted discrepancies between the witness accounts from three Toronto police officers and that of experts and what was reflected in evidence. The judge also apologized to Zameer for what he'd been through in the years leading up to the verdict."
Ontario Provincial Police concluded their review of Toronto police officers' testimony and conduct in the case of Umar Zameer, who was charged with first-degree murder in the 2021 death of Detective-Constable Jeffrey Northrup in a Toronto city hall parking garage. Zameer was acquitted by jury in 2024. The investigation was initiated by Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw after the trial judge noted possible collusion among three witness officers. The OPP investigation is complete, but Toronto Police Service is reviewing the report and notifying affected individuals before public release. During trial, Justice Anne Molloy identified discrepancies between officer testimonies and expert evidence, including video documentation.
