Ontario union leader won't be seeking re-election in May vote | CBC News
"I know this moment also calls for renewal. That is why I am writing to let you know that I will not be re-offering as President at the CUPE Ontario Convention this May, said Hahn in a letter to members. While my role as President will come to an end, my commitment to this union will not. I will continue to stand with youin solidarity, in struggle, and in hopejust as I always have."
"In August 2024, Hahn apologized after sharing a video on Facebook that caused discord within the union. The video depicted an Olympic diver, with a Star of David on his arm, jump off a board and turn into a bomb that explodes as he heads into the water. Hahn said in a social media post at that time that he intended to criticize the Olympic committee's decision to not bar Israel from the Paris games."
Fred Hahn will not re-offer as CUPE Ontario president at the convention in May and will remain committed to the union, pledging continued solidarity and struggle. Hahn has served on CUPE Ontario's executive board since 2006 and as president since 2010, making him the union's longest-serving officer. CUPE Ontario endorsed boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel as the first North American union to do so, reflecting a claim that solidarity must be international. Hahn apologized in 2024 after sharing a Facebook video that depicted an Olympic diver turning into a bomb and said his intent was to criticize the Olympic committee's decision not to bar Israel, while rejecting associating Jewish people with state violence.
