Calandra says the fund is a start, and if more is needed, he is prepare to offer more support. Liam Riazati was killed in September when an SUV crashed into the daycare, also leaving six other young children and three adults injured."
Ontario is creating a $20-million Liam Riazati Memorial Fund to help community child-care centres improve physical safety against vehicle intrusions. Child-care centres will be able to apply for the fund early next year. The fund specifically will support installation of concrete barriers while the province examines longer-term safety requirements. Community child-care centres often operate in plazas or places of worship adjacent to parking lots, increasing exposure to vehicle risks. Education Minister Paul Calandra described the fund as an initial step and said additional support could be provided if needed. Liam Riazati was killed in September when an SUV crashed into the daycare, injuring others.
