Premier Doug Ford's administration is modifying the controversial Bill 5 to better address First Nation concerns regarding a new mining law. The bill, intended to expedite mining projects in Ontario, will explicitly incorporate provisions for meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities throughout. Following intense opposition from First Nations, who demand the bill's cancellation, the province plans to engage directly with Indigenous leaders post-passage. The initial special economic zone proposed at the Ring of Fire faces scrutiny, highlighting ongoing tensions between the government and Indigenous rights advocates.
"We are going to enunciate explicitly in each one that the duty to consult is there and it will be upheld to the highest standards," Rickford said.
First Nation chiefs have shown up en masse at Queen's Park to tell the politicians that the province is going about this in the wrong way.
The Chiefs of Ontario stated that the bill should be killed outright so they can be consulted from the start.
Rickford and Lecce say the province will amend Bill 5 to explicitly include duty to consult provisions throughout the bill.
