Ontario has completed nearly 6,700 long-term care beds and has about 18,000 additional beds in planning or development, well short of the 58,000-bed expansion target by 2028. The province launched a modernization plan in 2021 after COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes. Forty-four long-term care homes have been built and 104 are under construction or approved. The province introduced a permanent capital funding program offering larger contributions to stimulate construction. AdvantAge Ontario called the program a "game changer," and CEO Lisa Levin said it has already spurred members to begin building and gives the sector greater confidence.
