"The motion comes after the former prince announced last month he would be giving up his title as Duke of York, following years of criticism about his behaviour and connections to late U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In 2022, he settled a lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, accusing him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager. A statement issued by Buckingham Palace last month also said that King Charles had initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honors of Prince Andrew."
"City council amended Tedjo's motion Wednesday to avoid renaming, which deputy mayor and Ward 4 Coun. John Kovac said would be costly and inconvenient for residents. The amendment passed unanimously. Instead, councillors directed that city officials undertake "symbolic gestures, such as removing plaques that name Andrew from Mississauga property. Kovac noted Duke of York Boulevard has no direct relation to Andrew, and said that the title has been around for over 700 years.""
"I am disappointed that we are not moving forward with a renaming, Tedjo said. We are finding a middle ground that is more convenient for ourselves and for the residents."
Mississauga city council declined to rename Duke of York Boulevard after a motion sought removal of references to the former Duke of York and renaming the street. Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo introduced the motion calling for removal of references and renaming the boulevard. Council amended the motion to avoid renaming due to cost and inconvenience, and the amendment passed unanimously. Councillors directed city officials to undertake symbolic gestures, such as removing plaques that name Andrew from Mississauga property. Duke of York Boulevard was named in 1987 during a visit when Andrew held the title. Andrew relinquished the title following allegations, a 2022 settlement, and a Buckingham Palace process.
