"I'm not a violent person, he said repeatedly. Breen's lawyer mentioned that his client suffered a traumatic injury at the hands of the homeowner."
"I don't have any memories. I've sat now for nine months in jail and I've sat every day trying to figure out how ... I got myself so screwed."
Michael Kyle Breen pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and failing to comply with a probation order related to an incident in Lindsay, Ont. on August 18, 2025. The case gained attention after the apartment resident, Jeremy David McDonald, was initially charged with assault for confronting Breen with a knife. Premier Doug Ford criticized the charges against McDonald, while police stated that Canadians do not have an unlimited right to self-defense. Charges against McDonald were dropped in February due to lack of evidence. Breen claimed he was not violent and had no memories of the incident.
