Criticism of foreign governments is protected under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, however advocating for political violence, glorifying terrorist organisations and displaying hate symbols that directly target the Jewish community are not protected forms of expression and will not be tolerated by our government. Canada has deemed Kneecap ineligible to enter the country on grounds that the group allegedly glorified terrorist organisations. The Belfast trio comprises Naoise O Caireallain, Liam Og O hAnnaidh and JJ O Dochartaigh and is known for provocative lyrics, merchandise and a pro-Palestine stance. Incidents cited include footage of a member appearing to say "Up Hamas, up Hezbollah," a Glastonbury set investigated with no further action taken, and a court appearance over an alleged Hezbollah flag display. Parliamentary secretary Vince Gasparro framed the ban as a response to advocacy of political violence and hate that is not protected speech.
