Hindu community members say proposed Mississauga firework ban would impede religious freedoms | CBC News
"If approved, new laws would go into effect in January 2026 and outlaw the use and sale of fireworks for individual use. Under the ban, public fireworks could be allowed for community events if they are done by a professional and approved by Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, according to a staff report that initially proposed the ban in May."
"Georgios Fthenos, the director of enforcement for the City of Mississauga, said the proposed ban aims to reduce complaints, enforcement costs and environmental concerns. He said firework use is difficult to enforce and a total ban would send a clear message to the public and encourage people to go through proper approval channels. He said it could take a few years for the effects of the ban to be felt."
City council delayed a vote on a proposed year-round ban on consumer fireworks until Oct. 15. If approved, the ban would take effect in January 2026 and make individual sale and use of fireworks illegal while allowing professionally run, approved public displays for community events. Current rules permit consumer fireworks during certain holiday hours, including Diwali, Lunar New Year and New Year’s Eve; the proposed ban would remove holiday exceptions. Officials cite rising complaints, enforcement difficulty, costs and environmental concerns. Community members say the ban disproportionately impacts Diwali family traditions and religious freedom.
