Greenland PM says island not a 'piece of property' for sale DW 04/27/2025
Briefly

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made his first visit to Denmark to strengthen ties, amid President Trump's controversial remarks about potentially annexing Greenland. He firmly stated that Greenland will never be treated as a commodity and expressed openness to a partnership with the US, provided there is mutual respect. During this three-day visit, Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that only Greenlanders can determine their territory's future, showcasing solidarity amid concerns about US ambitions while trying to maintain positive relations with the traditional ally.
"We are ready for a strong partnership (with the US) and more development, but we want respect ... We will never be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone," Nielsen told reporters.
Nielsen criticized President Donald Trump's comments on seizing the Danish autonomous territory as lacking respect but said he would be willing to meet the US leader for talks.
Both leaders of Denmark and Greenland have said only Greenlanders can decide the territory's future.
The second meeting in a matter of weeks was described as a display of unity between the mineral-rich island, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, and Denmark.
