"Canada baseball fans are going to be heartbroken once again as Dodgers first baseman has announced that he will not be participating in the World Baseball Classic for Team Canada. The plan was for Team Canada to use Freeman as a Designated Hitter, but due to "personal reasons," Freddie has withdrawn, leaving a gaping hole of veteran leadership and offensive output with his bat."
"For those who don't know, Freddie Freeman is from California, but both his parents hold Canadian citizenship, so he has dual citizenship. Despite having Freeman in the roster in 2017 and 2023, Team Canada has not been able to pass the first round of the World Baseball Classic. Let's just hope that "personal reasons" extends to just the health of his body."
Freddie Freeman has withdrawn from Team Canada’s World Baseball Classic roster for personal reasons and was expected to serve as the designated hitter. The 36-year-old is coming off back-to-back World Series championships with the Dodgers, making rest a possible factor. Jordan Romano is also unavailable, while Jameson Taillon, catcher Liam Hicks, and infielder Tyler Black have been added. Team Canada plans to rely on Josh Naylor and Tyler O'Neil to help fill Freeman’s offensive void in a pool with Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, and Colombia. Freeman holds dual citizenship through his Canadian parents, and Canada has not advanced past the WBC first round.
