Food prices in Canada could also see an increase of four to six per cent in 2026, according to a December forecast by researchers at Dalhousie University. Daily Bread Food Bank CEO Neil Heatherington said those statistics are concerning, but not new."
More than 200 volunteers and politicians, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, gathered in Etobicoke to sort and package 90,000 lbs of holiday food donations for distribution to families and individuals facing food insecurity. The Daily Bread Food Bank reported more than 4.1 million food bank visits this year and that over one in ten Torontonians currently rely on the food bank. The organization sends out about 200,000 lbs of food per day and roughly 1,000,000 lbs per week. A Dalhousie University forecast predicts food prices could increase four to six per cent in 2026. CEO Neil Heatherington noted many users have post-secondary education or full-time employment and called for affordable housing and income supports as long-term solutions.
