Exhibition Grounds to be controlled by province under proposed Ontario Place legislation | CBC News
"Proposed changes to legislation guiding the Ontario Place development would give the province control over Toronto's city-owned Exhibition Grounds. One opposition member is calling it a land grab. Changes to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, which allow the Exhibition Grounds to be designated as part of the Ontario Place site, were tabled in Bill 68 last week. If passed, the legislation would allow the province to assume control over decisions regarding the sale and alteration of the land and buildings on the site."
"If it is what it looks like, that is not acceptable, Malik told reporters at a news conference on Friday. The Exhibition Place grounds are a key city asset, and they have to remain in city hands. The city agreed to take a step back from the Ontario Place redevelopment in exchange for funding for transit, homelessness and housing in 2023. The Exhibition Grounds weren't part of the deal."
Amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act in Bill 68 would allow the Exhibition Grounds to be designated as part of the Ontario Place site and permit the province to make decisions on the sale and alteration of land and buildings. Several key venues are included, such as BMO Field, Coca-Cola Coliseum and the Exhibition Place venue, which host major events like the Canadian National Exhibition and Toronto FC games. Toronto officials, including Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, say the city was not consulted and insist the Exhibition Grounds must remain a city asset. The province says the changes aim to speed construction and development approvals.
