""Going back for generations, Canadians have visited New Hampshire and many other states along the U.S.-Canada border to see family or friends, stay in our hotels, share a meal at our restaurants, and shop at our stores," said U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee."
""However, in the wake of President Trump's reckless tariffs and needless provocations, fewer and fewer Canadians are making trips to the United States, putting many American businesses in jeopardy and straining the close ties that bind our two nations.""
A Joint Economic Committee (JEC) analysis using U.S. Customs and Border Protection travel statistics finds a sharp decline in Canadian visits across the U.S. northern border. From January to October 2025, passenger vehicle crossings fell nearly 20% compared with the same period in 2024. Some border states experienced declines up to 27%. Local tourism agencies report fewer tourists, rising hotel vacancies, and weaker retail and restaurant sales. President Trump’s proposed annexation of Canada, multiple rounds of tariffs, and broken trade talks with Ottawa have contributed to a chill in cross-border travel and spending.
