E-bikes, E-scooters prohibited on TTC until April | CBC News
"Starting Saturday, e-bikes and e-scooters are banned from Toronto Transit Commission vehicles and property until April 15. Anyone who brings an e-bike or e-scooter into TTC property during the ban will be "educated on the ban, and if they refuse to comply, they will be asked to leave the system," according to the TTC's website. Anyone who further refuses to comply could be arrested or fined."
"In September, Toronto's fire chief, Jim Jessop, called e-bike and e-scooter battery fires "the largest growing fire safety risk in the city." Jessop called on the federal government to increase regulations on the lithium-ion batteries and said Toronto Fire Service has done what they can in terms of public education. "What we do not have control over is the certification and standards of the batteries, primarily for the mobility devices, which is causing the problem," Jessop told CBC Toronto in September."
The Toronto Transit Commission is banning lithium-ion e-bikes and e-scooters from TTC vehicles and property until April 15. Enforcement will start with education, and noncompliant individuals will be asked to leave the system and could face arrest or fines. The winter ban was introduced because salt and water increase the fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries. A recent apartment explosion appeared linked to an e-bike battery, and the city fire chief called such battery fires the fastest-growing fire safety risk, urging stronger federal battery certification and standards. E-bikes and scooters can be parked near subway stations or in city bike storage; non-electronic bikes remain allowed on TTC during permitted hours.
