In Byneset, Norway, a man named Johan Helberg woke to find a large 443-foot shipping vessel, the NCL Salten, inadvertently lodged in his yard after it ran aground. Luckily, there were no injuries among the 16 crew members on board. Helberg expressed disbelief at the proximity of the ship to his home, noting a narrow escape from disaster. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause, and initial assessments indicated some damage, including a landslide that led to nearby evacuations.
"It was quite absurd," Helberg said, noting that it had stopped just meters from his house.
"If it had hit five meters further to the right, it would have slid up the rocky cliff, and then my house would probably look quite different," Helberg said.
"We are currently assessing the damage to the ship and have initiated an internal investigation into the root causes of the incident," Hetland said.
The impact triggered a landslide about noon on Thursday, prompting the brief evacuations of some of those who live nearby.
