Geoffrey Morawetz, chief justice of the Ontario Superior Court, will retire on May 15 after roughly seven years as chief justice and 21 years as a judge. He led efforts to replace the court's outdated paper-based system with a digital platform. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to online hearings and electronic filings. The first phase of a new online portal launched in Toronto for civil and family matters, with criminal cases to follow next year and a provincial rollout planned by 2030. Morawetz sought an off-the-shelf end-to-end digital platform in 2020 and initiated reforms to the civil rules, including a 2024 review that submitted final recommendations.
