Caroline Mulroney announced her resignation as an Ontario cabinet minister, effective June 5, saying she wants to begin a new chapter. Elected in 2018 with Premier Doug Ford’s first government, she served in multiple cabinet roles, including attorney general, transportation, Francophone affairs, and president of the Treasury Board. She attributed the timing to two years since the death of her father, former prime minister Brian Mulroney, and said that as empty nesters she and her husband are ready to step back from elected life. Ford praised her steady leadership and named Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy as interim president of the Treasury Board. Her resignation will require a byelection in York-Simcoe, alongside another byelection in Scarborough Southwest that must be called by the end of summer.
"Ford said in a statement that Ontario is lucky to have benefitted from Mulroney's calm and steady leadership. He has tapped Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy to serve as interim president of the Treasury Board once Mulroney's resignation takes effect on June 5."
"Mulroney's resignation will trigger a byelection in her riding of York-Simcoe, in addition to one in Scarborough Southwest that Ford must call by the end of summer."
