Canadian Prime Minister Cuts in to Fact Check Trump in the Oval Office
Briefly

In an Oval Office exchange, newly-elected Canadian PM Mark Carney interrupted President Trump to clarify Canada's significant trade relationship with the U.S., asserting that Canada would not become the U.S.'s 51st state. Carney stressed Canada's position as America's largest client and noted the complexity of tariff discussions, emphasizing collaboration. While Trump insisted that the U.S. runs a trade deficit with Canada, he also characterized the negotiations as friendly, highlighting the necessity of ongoing dialogue to address trade concerns amicably.
Canadians' view on this is not going to change on the 51st state. We are the largest client of the United States in the totality of all the goods.
The changes that have been made have been helpful. You know, 50% of a car that comes from Canada is American. That's not like anywhere else.
There are much bigger forces involved, and this will take some time, and some discussions, and that's why we're here, to have those discussions.
Negotiations between the two countries would be very friendly, as well as to continue to assert that America's trade deficit with Canada means that the former is subsidizing the latter.
