Canadian Politician Steps Down After It's Revealed He Bought a Signed Copy of Mein Kampf
"It's not to be taken as an insult to any anti-racist group, Jouppien told CBC News. It was collected in the sincere interest of history. Jouppien added that not many people have the resources [Gale has] to preserve rare items and that his collection is a contribution to history."
"According to the documents, Gale paid more than $6,000 for a copy of Mein Kampf signed by the former Nazi dictator himself. Documents confirmed by Niagara historian Jon K. Jouppien show Gale purchased the signed edition of Hitler's book at an auction in 2010."
Niagara Region Chair Bob Gale stepped down from his position after documents revealed he purchased a signed copy of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf for over $6,000 at an auction in 2010. The discovery came when Saleh Waziruddin from the Niagara Anti-Racism Association received documentation of the purchase. Gale initially responded by dismissing the claim as circulated by a communist party member. Historian Jon K. Jouppien confirmed the purchase's legitimacy and stated it was part of Gale's historical artifact collection worth millions of dollars, collected in sincere interest of history rather than as ideological endorsement. Despite this explanation, Gale resigned after serving 84 days as regional chair.
