"It has become a deeply unfortunate Canadian cliché: the Uber driver with a medical degree from their country of origin. In a nation where families can wait six months or more just to find a family doctor, this represents a staggering waste of human talent and a systemic failure. But this tragedy is not unique to medicine. I see it firsthand in my own field."
"I currently have three graduate students at the University of Ottawa who hold counseling degrees from their home countries, yet they face insurmountable barriers to registration from the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, their regulatory body. This forces us to ask an urgent and uncomfortable related question: How many perfectly qualified psychologists are driving for ride-share apps while a child in crisis waits a year or more for mental health care?"
Canada wastes internationally trained mental health professionals, producing long waits for care. Many with foreign credentials face regulatory barriers to practice in Ontario. Examples include graduate students with counseling degrees who cannot register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Registered professional psychology faculty in Ontario are 83% White and only 11% are people of colour. Proposed amendments by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario aim to broaden registration processes. Reforms must avoid creating a new bias favoring applicants from White, English-speaking nations. True equity requires proactive multinational review to recruit global talent.
