Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a campaign platform prioritizing military and infrastructure investments alongside tax reductions while addressing ongoing tensions with the US. Demonstrating a commitment to economic strength, Carney's plan includes exceeding NATO's defence spending target of 2% of GDP by 2030 with purchases of military assets. Amid concerns over relations with US President Trump, he emphasizes the need for Canada to assert its sovereignty and diversify trade markets. The upcoming elections will be crucial in determining whether he retains power or faces challenge from the Conservative opposition.
We're in an enormous crisis, so we have to be able to do two things: one, hold down on that wasteful spending, which we will do, but much more than that, we need to be bold and drive investment in the economy and take the amazing opportunities we have, Carney said.
President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, and that will never happen, Carney said on Saturday. Canada is not America, and it never will be, but we need to do more to just recognize that.
