Canada recognizes State of Palestine, offers help to build peaceful future with Israel | CBC News
"Over many decades, Canada's commitment to [a two-state solution] was premised on the expectation that this outcome would eventually be achieved as part of a negotiated settlement,"
"Hamas has terrorized the people of Israel and oppressed the people of Gaza, wreaking horrific suffering,"
"Hamas has stolen from the Palestinian people, cheated them of their life and liberty and can in no way dictate their future."
"the current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established.... It is now the avowed policy of the current Israeli government that 'there will be no Palestinian state."
Canada officially recognizes the State of Palestine alongside partner countries to preserve the prospect of a two-state solution. The decision responds to perceived erosion of that prospect due to the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, an Israeli parliamentary resolution supporting annexation of the occupied West Bank, and restrictions on humanitarian aid. Hamas is described as having terrorized Israelis and oppressed Gazans, inflicting horrific suffering and depriving Palestinians of life and liberty. The current Israeli government is described as working to prevent establishment of a Palestinian state, stating 'there will be no Palestinian state.' Canada offers partnership to build a peaceful future for both states, and Australia and the United Kingdom also announced recognition around the same time while preparations proceed for meetings at the United Nations General Assembly.
