Canada Post is back in negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers after a strike led to significant package backlogs last Christmas. With the current collective agreement set to expire on May 22, the two parties are eager to reach a new deal. The Labour Minister has initiated a commission to investigate Canada Post's financial challenges, with findings due before the May deadline. Employment lawyer Hena Singh highlighted the unusual government intervention during this process, suggesting that if negotiations fail, another strike may occur.
"We had a pause in the negotiations and the government sent everyone back to work to go through this commission process. And then now they're all coming back to the table," Hena Singh noted, emphasizing the importance of the impending negotiations as the old agreement nears expiry.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon aims to address Canada Post's financial issues with an industrial inquiry commission, whose findings are expected before negotiations conclude.
