The federal government has announced a $30 million advance payment to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation regarding their treaty claim over nearly 11,000 acres of land. The First Nation filed the claim in 2019, alleging that their land was improperly surrendered in 1820. This payment is seen as a down payment towards resolving the historical grievances faced by the First Nation, who hope to use the proceeds to establish stronger urban representation in the Greater Toronto Area.
The federal government said it will pay $30 million to Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to advance treaty negotiations concerning 11,000 acres of land.
Chief Claire Sault remarked that the First Nation hasn't benefited from valuable land in the Greater Toronto Area saying, "Everybody benefited but us."
Anandasangaree stated the payment is a down payment on what will hopefully be resolved soon, as it acknowledges the historical injustice faced by the First Nation.
Chief Sault expressed a desire to establish an urban reserve in the GTA, wanting the First Nation to have a stronger presence there once again.
