"There's no one single solution to the problem of impaired driving,"
"So I think any time we see some reforms that are positive, that's a step in the right direction."
"A lot of people continue to drink and drive, which is frankly baffling when you consider that people can make alternative arrangements to get home safely and some people choose not to do so,"
"At MADD, we think that people who drive impaired can benefit from education about how alcohol can can impact your system and your ability to drive,"
Ontario changed the Highway Traffic Act effective Jan. 1 to impose a lifetime licence suspension for impaired driving causing death. First-time offenders now face seven-day immediate licence suspensions, up from three days. Driving bans that were previously handed down at judicial discretion now include automatic bans in certain cases. Mandatory education for people convicted of impaired driving will occur after the first offence rather than the second. Ontario Provincial Police data from December's RIDE program recorded 1,268 impaired-driving charges provincewide, including 269 in the London area and 40 warn-range suspensions. MADD and police express support for tougher, consistent penalties and early education.
