"Education Minister Paul Calandra stated, 'A student should be in the school. If you can be there, you should be in class. You should be learning, you should be participating.' This reflects the government's commitment to improving attendance rates."
"The data shows that only 40% of high school students regularly attended school in the 2024-25 school year, a significant drop from nearly 60% in 2018-19, highlighting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education."
Student attendance in Ontario has sharply declined, with only 40% of high school students attending regularly in the 2024-25 school year, down from nearly 60% pre-pandemic. For elementary students, attendance is at 55.5%, compared to nearly 70% before COVID-19. In response to high absenteeism, the education minister announced that attendance will now contribute to final marks for high school students, with 15% for Grades 9 and 10, and 10% for Grades 11 and 12. Additional measures include capping elected trustees and introducing new executive positions.
