York Regional Police reported that Markham Animal Services is investigating after a 16-year-old girl was reportedly bitten by a coyote around 8:15 a.m. near Mingay Avenue and Bur Oak Avenue. The girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A biology professor said coyote bites in Ontario are uncommon and out of the ordinary, especially in urban or semi-urban areas. He noted that coyotes may act aggressively near dens to protect young, but biting while someone is simply walking in a park is unusual and alarming. A nearby resident said coyotes are sometimes seen early in the morning and carries a stick on trails. The professor advised people approached by a coyote to be disproportionately loud and assertive, even if afraid, to deter further pursuit.
"Murray said anyone approached by a coyote should be "disproportionately loud" and not show fear. "It's a time to be very assertive, even though your heart might be pounding," he said. "In most cases, that will be sufficient to deter the animal from pursuing things any further.""
