Alleged attack on Crown attorney from prisoner box prompts calls for Ontario to step up safety in courtrooms | CBC News
"As the organization responsible for courtroom safety, the issue of the prisoner box in this courtroom has been an ongoing concern. I have expressed my concern about the court facilities here on more than one occasion."
"When you are a Crown prosecutor, you are prosecuting people who are often charged with violent offences. We need to know that we're safe in the courtroom, safe in the courthouse, and safe when we leave the courthouse."
A 30-year-old man allegedly jumped from the prisoner's box and assaulted a female Crown attorney during a dangerous offender hearing at Ontario Superior Court in Peterborough. The man was charged with assault after special constables subdued him. Police Chief Stuart Betts confirmed that courtroom safety has been an ongoing concern and that a new prisoner's box with plexiglass barrier has been agreed upon. The Ontario Crown Attorneys' Association and an NDP MPP are urging the Doug Ford government to enhance courtroom safety. Betts expressed concern that such an incident could occur despite temporary security measures being implemented.
