All 100 Toronto Public Library branches will now be open on Sundays | CBC News
"Good news Toronto readers: starting this week, all of Toronto's 100 public libraries will be open on Sundays. Thirty-three library branches will now be open on Sundays for the first time, while 67 are extending their Sunday hours, a Toronto Public Library (TPL) news release said Friday. The change means all libraries will be open Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., except on holidays."
"Heather Mathis, TPL's director of operations, said that she and others have been pushing for these extended hours since 2006. This expansion means that for the first time, every neighbourhood in Toronto will have Sunday access to welcoming public spaces, to technology, to books, programs and more, she said at a news conference Friday. We've come to understand the simple truth: the best thing that a library can be is open."
"At Friday's conference, Mayor Olivia Chow said that the library is an essential place for newcomers that are a bit lost, kids that are feeling lonely, seniors looking for companionship, family's looking for a place to gather and more. Going to the library is free, [so is] joining a library class or programs, Chow said. Expanding free library services is a way to ease the burden for everyone in an affordability crisis."
All 100 Toronto public library branches will be open on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., except on holidays. Thirty-three branches will open Sundays for the first time and 67 branches are extending their Sunday hours. Weekday hours will expand starting summer 2026 so every branch is slated to operate seven days a week year-round. Extended hours have been pursued since 2006. The expansion will provide neighbourhood access to public spaces, technology, books and programs. Last year 81 percent of Torontonians used the library and 235,270 people registered for a library card. Free library services aim to ease affordability pressures and support newcomers, children, seniors and families.
