"We need to be showing criminals that we're a little harder than they suspect,"
"You have more to deal with than just walking, grabbing things."
"One of the downfalls of the security industry [in Canada] currently is it's very passive,"
A pickup truck was driven through the front window of Ancaster Jewellers last December, enabling about six people to enter, one armed with a gun. The owner triggered alarms and called 911, dislodged the gun, and was struck in the face with a hammer; his 33-year-old son was hit in the back with a sledgehammer. The attackers fled when police arrived and the store reopened two weeks later. The store installed a rapid dense-fog anti-theft system that floods the interior within seconds to obstruct intruders. A Burlington-based company obtained approval to sell smoke-screen systems in Canada and sold its initial 50-unit supply from the U.K., noting the technology is common in the U.K. and Europe and shifts security from passive alerts to active interruption of crimes.
