Advocate calls on Ontario government to address 'crisis' of missing Black boys | CBC News
"Earlier this month, McCalla said she sent a brief to Solicitor General Michael Kerzner's office outlining the issue and making 15 recommendations. Kerzner's office did not say whether it had received the brief when asked for comment. McCalla has a virtual meeting planned with the solicitor general's office at the end of the month, but hopes to present her brief to Kerzner face-to-face. The solicitor general's office did not say whether there are plans for Kerzner to meet McCalla in person."
"Missing Black boys are falling through a number of systemic gaps, including poor communication from police and fragmented co-ordination between jurisdictions, McCalla said. This disconnect is a serious concern as detailed in an investigation by CBC's the fifth estate that found that missing boys from the GTA are travelling to northern Ontario to work in drug dens."
""Families find a lot of times that they're left without any updates," she said. "There's no real understanding of their child being looked for at all.""
Shana McCalla launched Find Ontario Missing Black Boys in 2024 to share information about missing boys online and to act as an intermediary for families. Families frequently receive no updates and face poor communication from police, leaving children effectively unsearched across jurisdictions. Missing Black boys are being groomed into drug trafficking gangs and are travelling from the Greater Toronto Area to northern Ontario to work in drug dens. Systemic gaps include fragmented coordination between police services and limited criteria for Amber Alerts. McCalla sent a brief with 15 recommendations to the solicitor general's office and has a virtual meeting planned to seek policy change and improved data collection.
