World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opens with among worst rounds at Pebble Beach Pro-Am
"PEBBLE BEACH Two fans in puffy vests, with transfusion cocktails in hand, walked upstream among the 10th hole's gallery as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am opened Thursday. Ah, Scheffler. That's why there is a crowd, one of the middle-aged men said to the other. Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1-rated golfer since May 2023, indeed should be the No. 1 attraction this week, aside from the heavenly landscape."
"Only two other golfers, each at 2-over, scored higher at Pebble than Scheffler. Scores were so low that a third of the field 27 golfers emerged 5-under or lower. Scheffler's line: three birdies, three bogeys, and one putter flip in disgust after missing a birdie and settling for a tap-in par on 15th. He also had a huge mud ball that detoured his second shot on the second hole."
Fans gathered at Pebble Beach drawn largely by Scottie Scheffler, yet Scheffler posted an even-par debut and sat tied for 64th in the 80-man field. Ryo Hisatsune shot 10-under in his first round at Pebble to take the lead. Ten golfers finished 7-under with many of the lowest scores posted at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. Defending champion Rory McIlroy reached 4-under after holing out from a bunker. The pro-am environment showed fewer celebrities as the event serves as the PGA Tour's first Signature Event, with sunny weather and rain forecast for Sunday.
