"He heard rumbling and thought it was an earthquake, and he went out to see. He's seen the wires, you know, like with the earthquake move, and he looked up and the gush of water was already coming. He got swept to a big rock in the middle of the river, and then from that he prayed, God save me. And about that time another gush of water shot him across the riverbank."
"Rescuers with CAL FIRE spotted Howard from a helicopter and pulled him to safety. He nearly drowned and coded for 8 minutes before medics resuscitated him. Howard suffered a collapsed lung, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken knee and deep cuts."
"He's alive, and that's all that really matters to me. He can be broken all he wants to be, but he's here. It's all I told him the whole time is I love you. I love you. You got this. You got this."
A 59-year-old security guard at the New Colgate Powerhouse was caught in a massive water surge when a large pipe ruptured on Friday the 13th. Hearing rumbling he initially mistook for an earthquake, he went outside to investigate and was swept 35 feet into the Yuba River. He was tossed violently in the churning water, struck a rock, and was propelled across the riverbank by another surge. CAL FIRE helicopter rescuers spotted and extracted him from the water. He had nearly drowned and coded for 8 minutes before medics revived him. He sustained a collapsed lung, broken collarbone, broken ribs, broken knee, and severe lacerations across his body. His wife credits his survival to divine intervention and remains grateful he is alive despite his extensive injuries.
