On May 6, Emmanuel Singh was unloading groceries outside couchdate when three gunshots rang and a bullet ricocheted off his vehicle as a man was struck in front of the business. Singh requested municipal support, including a rent reduction, from city officials after the shooting. Couchdate announced it will leave its Frank Ogawa Plaza location on July 26. The hybrid bar, cafe, record shop, and community space served as a "third space" for Black and brown creatives and hosted vinyl listening parties on a high-fidelity sound system. Singh cited lack of city support and multiple citations for authorized events as reasons for leaving.
