"The lawsuits filed today allege a troubling pattern of negligence resulting in death, destruction, and tens of millions of federal taxpayer dollars spent to clean up one utility company's mistakes,"
"We continue our work to reduce the likelihood of our equipment starting a wildfire,"
"Southern California Edison is committed to wildfire mitigation through grid hardening, situational awareness and enhanced operational practices."
"In a July 31 report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the utility said while it has "not conclusively determined" its equipment was responsible for the fire, there was "concerning circumstantial evidence" that suggests its transmission facilities in the area could have been associated with the starting of the fire."
Two federal lawsuits accuse Southern California Edison of equipment failure and insufficient maintenance that sparked multiple fires, including the Jan. 7 Eaton Fire. The Eaton Fire destroyed more than 9,400 structures and killed 17 people. The filings allege Edison did not properly maintain power and transmission infrastructure near Eaton Canyon and seek more than $40 million in damages to federal, state and local governments. Edison said it is reviewing the lawsuits and detected a "fault" on a transmission line around the fire's start. A July 31 SEC report said the utility has "not conclusively determined" responsibility but noted "concerning circumstantial evidence." Edison reiterated commitments to grid hardening, situational awareness and enhanced operational practices.
