Waymo received approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to begin testing autonomous vehicles in seven Solano County cities. The approvals form part of a broader expansion of testing across Northern California, including parts of the Sacramento region and Yolo County. Waymo still must obtain a permit from the California Public Utilities Commission before offering paid public rides in the newly approved areas. Community responses were mixed. Vallejo City Councilmember Helen-Marie "Cookie" Gordon expressed optimism, viewing testing as an entrepreneurial opportunity that could strengthen the local economy and address gaps in evening and weekend transportation through innovative mobility solutions.
