A 12-inch cast iron water main installed in 1942 broke around 7:30 p.m. Sunday near Webster Street and Buena Vista Avenue, causing sink holes and flooding. The affected area extended from Buena Vista and Webster to the Alameda Landing area and Alameda Point. Some East Bay Municipal Utility District customers experienced low water pressure while others had no water. EBMUD crews repaired the break Sunday night and restored service to all but four customers, with full service expected later Monday. Crews continued pavement repairs Monday morning and a stretch of Webster Street remained closed with one lane open and detours in place. The cause of the break is under investigation.
