UC Berkeley student and advocate to serve jail time over stolen chickens
"Zoe Rosenberg, 23, was found guilty of illegally removing the chickens from the facility on June 13, 2023, as well as other actions, and conspiring with her advocacy group, Direct Action Everywhere, a Bay Area-based grassroots animal rights organization, the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office said in a news release Wednesday. Rosenberg stole the chickens because she believed they were in a cruel environment, according to a statement from the advocacy organization."
"Prosecutors showed that Rosenberg and others in the group coordinated break-ins over the course of two months in 2023. Evidence presented at the trial showed that they used disguises, cut through a fence, placed tracking devices on the facility's trailers and stole business records. The group was also accused of placing hidden cameras in the facility in April and May of that year, according to the release."
Zoe Rosenberg, 23, a UC Berkeley student and animal rights activist, was convicted of felony conspiracy and three misdemeanors for removing live chickens from Petaluma Poultry on June 13, 2023, and was sentenced to 90 days in county jail. Rosenberg acted with members of Direct Action Everywhere and said she believed the birds were in a cruel environment. Prosecutors presented evidence of coordinated break-ins over two months, use of disguises, cutting through a fence, placing tracking devices on trailers, stealing business records, and placing hidden cameras in the facility. The district attorney emphasized that biosecure food facilities are dangerous to breach and that strong beliefs do not excuse illegal actions.
