This Oakland community is being terrorized by flurry of car break-ins every night
"5 to 7 cars. Sometimes more than that, they kind of hit up several cars at a time and they make it kind of like a routine,"
"The people who live on the street-facing part of the building they will kind of keep lookout. And so, we have a group text, and so they'll text and say, hey, you know, they're breaking into cars because several cars have gotten stolen as well,"
"Because of Brooklyn Basin's proximity, especially, I think, to the highway. It's made it a really easy target and downtown for people to come in, break windows, steal things out of cars and cars themselves, and then leave,"
"This past week, there was a series of at least 15 car break-ins, which is totally unacceptable."
Brooklyn Basin residents report nightly groups of masked people breaking into multiple cars around 4 a.m., often targeting five to seven vehicles at a time. Residents have organized watches, taken turns staying awake, documenting incidents, and using a group text to alert neighbors. Police response is inconsistent and can take two to three hours. The waterfront community's proximity to the highway and downtown appears to make it an easy target. New development and limited safe parking contribute to vulnerability. The local councilmember described a recent surge of about 15 break-ins as unacceptable and police are investigating.
