"Newsom has already made some decisions. Late last month, he signed AB 493, by Assemblymember John Harabedian, D-Pasadena, to ensure that homeowners recovering after a disaster receive at least 2% interest on home insurance payouts held in escrow, thus closing a loophole that had allowed banks to keep the interest. The new law took effect immediately. Overall, we monitored nearly four dozen wildfire-related bills this legislative session."
Dozens of wildfire-related bills were introduced after January wildfires, and roughly half have passed the legislature and now await gubernatorial approval. The bills address home hardening, streamlining construction permit approvals, mortgage forbearance, and compensation and incentives for inmate firefighters. Gov. Newsom has already signed AB 493 to guarantee at least 2% interest on home insurance payouts held in escrow for homeowners recovering from disasters, with immediate effect. Nearly four dozen wildfire-related measures were monitored this session. AB 888, the California Safe Homes Act, would create a grant program to help homeowners fund fire-resistant roofs and vegetation clearance.
