"Two East Bay men are heading to prison for killing 29-year-old divinity student Isamaeli Eli Mata'afa when they fired into a group of friends after a fistfight on Telegraph Avenue one weekend night in 2022. Judge Rozlynn Sylvaggio sentenced Michael Edward Monrroy-Ramos of Union City to eight years in prison, and Andy Geovanny Gutierrez-Rebollo of Oakland to 14 years, for their roles in the October 2022 shooting that left Mata'afa dead and his three companions wounded."
"While one of the men, Gutierrez-Rebollo, has accepted some responsibility for Mata'afa's death, investigators never determined who fired the fatal shot or shots. Mata'afa's sister Tapu spoke in court at a sentencing hearing Thursday on behalf of their family. She talked about how in the more than three years since her brother died, their father, once a breadwinner for the family along with Eli, had completely shut down."
"She told the court how their mother cries often, but generally at the cemetery in Hayward where Mata'afa is buried, because she doesn't want us to see her break down. In the early hours of Oct. 8, 2022, Mata'afa and his three friends were heading to their car near Telegraph and Durant avenues when Monrroy-Ramos and Gutierrez-Rebollo, both 27, picked a fight with them, police said at the time."

Monrroy-Ramos pleaded no-contest to assault with a firearm while prosecutors originally charged both men with murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. The shooting occurred after a brief fistfight near Telegraph and Durant avenues when the men fired at least 17 rounds.
