Rene Campos, a registered sex offender, protested against new Fresno City Council rules that could prevent him and others from participating in local government. Campos, who has been on the sex offender registry since 2018, argued that he is being unfairly targeted and should not be barred from attending meetings or running for office. The City Council unanimously approved a measure to ban registered sex offenders from in-person meetings, citing safety concerns. Additional laws to restrict their political involvement are being considered, as current California law does not prohibit it.
