Search underway for missing swimmer in possible shark attack along Central Coast
"Investigators say the group entered the water as usual, but around noon, a witness on the shoreline reported seeing a "large splash." Police say the sight prompted the other swimmers to head back to shore out of concern it may have been a shark attack. Everyone in the group returned safely except the missing swimmer. "She's a 55-year-old, blonde, blue eyes woman that is currently missing and that we're searching," said Commander Brian Anderson with the Pacific Grove Police Department."
""Lovers Point Beach and all beaches within one mile are closed as of Sunday afternoon, December 21, 2025, as a precautionary measure due to unconfirmed shark incident. Updates to this post will be made as more details become available. We thank the community for abiding by this closure," said the city of Pacific Grove in a social media update. McAbee Beach and San Carlos Beach in Monterey are also closed due to safety concerns."
A 55-year-old woman disappeared during a weekly open-water swim near Lovers Point on Sunday afternoon. She was swimming with her regular Sunday group when a shoreline witness reported seeing a "large splash" around noon. Concerned swimmers returned to shore, believing a shark attack may have occurred; all others returned safely except the missing woman. Law enforcement said the incident may be consistent with a shark attack based on the witness account. Multiple agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey Fire Department, Seaside Fire and CAL FIRE are searching with boats, drones and helicopters. Beaches within one mile were closed and searches will resume at first light if she is not found.
