"Scenarios that include fewer prosecutions in domestic violence and sexual assault cases, as well as limited ability to seek non-trial options in other cases. "Will people get hurt? Will they be killed? Will criminals go free? I don't know," said Rosen."
""This is unprecedented. The federal government, state government, local government for many, many decades have always been working together," said Lee. Supervisor Lee says the recently passed Measure A will also help overall, providing money for health care in the county. "That's only covering one-third of the loss we'll be suffering," said Lee."
Santa Clara County faces a budget shortfall worsened by an annual $1 billion reduction in federal funding. The district attorney warns that cuts could produce fewer prosecutions in domestic violence and sexual assault cases and reduce ability to pursue non-trial options. County supervisors have moved to close the gap by eliminating 365 vacant positions. Board President Otto Lee described the situation as unprecedented and said Measure A will provide health-care funding but cover only about one-third of projected losses. The district attorney cautioned that cutting staff could produce severe public safety consequences.
