San Jose's unhoused residents move out of encampment at Columbus Park into converted hotel
"I feel great! I never thought that we were going to be like this and it was hard. It's still hard, but now that I've got a place that I'm going - thank God!"
"We have sufficient supply to offer everyone the opportunity to come indoors and based on the timing of when they accept that, is when they move in."
"We're really looking forward to creating a community advisory committee, where we can bring the neighbors in and help work with the kids, and the moms, and the families, to create, really, a family environment."
San Jose is clearing the largest South Bay encampment and moving residents into interim supportive housing with priority for Columbus Park residents. Two converted hotels opened the week of August 22, including the Bristol, which provides 47 rooms prioritized for families. The city has leased nine locations to house unhoused residents and indicates sufficient capacity to offer indoor options, with move-in timing based on when residents accept offers. HomeFirst operates the Bristol and provides single and double rooms with private bathrooms, access to services, a full kitchen, and two meals a day. Plans include a community advisory committee to involve neighbors and foster a family environment.
